WebMy 246 has a switch in the cassette bay that halves the speed to around 3 1/2 ips to play regular cassettes, not sure if the 488 has that. 3-3/4 is double speed; standard cassette speed is a blistering 1-7/8 ips. It's amazing it works at all :) It's all about the head gap size and resulting levels.
